Course Description:

This week-long immersion will introduce students to the history, cultural context, and present-day role of textile arts in our world. Participants will learn foundational techniques in natural dyeing inclusive of how to select fibers, how to wash and prepare your cloth to receive the dye, as well as various techniques in applying color ranging from how to achieve solid hues to stunning patterns. In addition, students will have an opportunity to see a functioning loom, and gain a basic understanding of how to weave. Students will come away with a naturally dyed silk scarf, a shibori-dyed cotton bandana, and a hand-sewn eye pillow in three distinct plant-based hues. Students will also have an opportunity to see natural dye plants within a garden context, and learn how to grow and tend to these plants themselves at home. This relevant knowledge, skills, and experience will serve to inspire participants throughout their lifetimes!

Students will need to bring a sun hat/ sun protection, a lunch, ample snacks, and a water bottle. The workshop will take place outdoors in a garden context.
